25A (Red) Filter

The 25A, usually used with Black and White film, is especially effective for increasing contrast. Ideal for dramatic cloud effects in landscapes. Can also be applied creatively in color and infrared photography.

The 25A is a popular deep red filter which can be used to create dramatic contrast between sky and clouds by darkening blue sky, or to simulate moonlight scenes in daytime (by slight underexposure) or to create greater contrast between green foliage and flowers. Used with infrared film, the 25 creates extreme contrast in sky, turns foliage white, and cuts throuqh haze, foq and mist.

For an example of how a 25A filter can impact your pictures, check out the image on the left; Filters lighten their own color and darken their complement. On the left of the example image, the red flowers are lightened by a # 25 red filter. On the right, the red flowers are darkened by a # 58 green filter. You can use these contrast filters to lighten or darken certain colors in a scene to create brightness differences between colors that would otherwise be reproduced as nearly the same shade of gray.

For example, a red apple and green leaves that are equally bright would reproduce as about the same tone of gray in a print. To provide separation between the apples and leaves, you might shoot through a 25A red filter. This would lighten the red apple in a print and darken the green leaves.
